We were given a short poem as our stimulus and from this I chose the words sharp and calm to work with. They are two contrasting words and therefore created two very different types of movement. When I combined the two together, I discovered that they helped to emphasise the sharpness and calmness of each other.

Project week!

As part of Project week I was given the opportunity to book a slot in the studio for an hour to begin work on my solo. I found it difficult to focus on a starting point as I had so many things that I needed to consider such as body parts, actions, quality, time and space. I also wanted to incorporate some of my previous ideas from my stimulus into my solo, in particular the idea of the waterfall and the freedom of nature.

In my first piece I explored the feet. I played with the idea of the noise and rhythms they can create as they can be light or heavy. It was also interesting to see how they can create a dance on their own without the rest of the body having to get involved and the different ways in which they can help you travel across the floor.

In my second piece I kept the word "freedom" in my mind as I choreographed. Although freedom can be created through smaller movements on the floor, I preferred to see how big I could make them and how far I could travel. I liked the idea of running in it, but I think I would prefer to run in a circle whilst incorporating other movements through it such as a spin. I think this would create a more fluid performance.

My third piece was quite similar to that of my first in the sense that I played with both the hands and the feet.

Solo Positions

In our choreography class we all worked on individual pieces of movement and then performed them to the group. However, in performing them we explored the many positions that we can start in when performing a dance. It was intriguing to see the difference in a performance that is danced to the back of the room, as opposed to the front. We then played with the idea of moving the audience to suit the performer. For example the audience could be placed in a square, in a circle or into two diagonal lines. I really enjoyed this exercise as it emphasised how important it is to pick a spot that will best reflect your dance and draw in an audience at the same time.

In my score I concentrated on illustrating how both the nature and people in the photo had a similar connection through the level of freedom they had. The waterfall has a great amount of freedom in the way the water falls, the gushing sounds and rhythms it creates and the energy it provides. As a result of this photo being taken in late June, the people in the photo have a newly found freedom away from exams and the pressure of school and career choices. When I look at this photo I associate with it words such as independence, youth, summer and vibrant colours. Through this sense of freedom, I feel that nature and humans share a common relationship.

I chose to work with this photo as I felt there were a range of different words and emotions that I could connect and associate with the photo. I also liked the idea that I could choose to focus on the people in the foreground of the photo or the nature in the background of the photo such as the waterfall.
